Web-Cam

Web-Cams are inexpensive, and are sometimes fun. I have seen quite a few on my customers computers, but they don't use them very much. The picture quality is not really that good. They can be used for conversations, but for most they were just a toy they used for awhile, then they are quickly forgotten. Some do use Digital Video cameras for making home movies, but that is another subject!

If you would like to have people see you and your family like a "Videophone", then go ahead and give it a try!

Web-Cam & Computers:  Sending images and video as easy as e-mail, easy as talking!

Distance may make the heart grow fonder, and talking via phone is nice, but not as nice as seeing them and hearing them live.!

Web cameras, called web cams, make seeing the caller as easy as saying ‘Hello,” and many times more memorable.  These have been available for a number of years, but had not attained serious popularity, until they became available on cellphones!

iPhone

This is probably due to the fact, that when done right, they are very simple to use! You can thank Apple and the iPhone! They were in the lead, with video calls. Now they are very popular on a phone (kind of where they belong, right? Now they are becoming common on tablets, though a tablet doesn't particularly fit well for phone calls, as say a cellphone?!

webcamWebcams are used for video telephoning, teleconferencing, sending personal videos back and forth, and finally,  as security monitors for kids, the dog or with one camera attached at the gate or door outside.

Web-Cam comes as part of a computer ’system’ or can be purchased separately for under $50---even less today---and the quality serves quite well for most people.  Here we will discuss the ‘whys’ and ‘wherefores’ of having a webcam, leaving technical discussion for you, Google searches and the internet! We will starting up, using and the easiest access services used and must be used by both the called and the callee. But today’s computers, webcams and the software allow easy installation and use.

Get a Web camera

One of my customers bought a webcam at Walmart, then tried to setup Skype. But it turns out, Skype was not compatible with that phone! So, we went to the Skype website, printed out what was compatible, then went to Walmart, to find the right kind. It was there.

Buy it at WalMart, or Best Buy where technical advice is readily available.  Easily available for $25 -50.  Special needs, such as higher quality, wireless, etc, can be purchased when necessary.

A video camera can be used, but the process is a bit more complicated.  If you don’t have experience with videos, taking them and transferring the videos to the computer, best start with a web cam(era).

Once you have your camera, install the software that comes with it and you should be ready to go to the next step in this tutorial.

Make sure you the instructions before plugging in the camera. Some require that you install the drivers first, others require the camera to be plugged in first. If you do it in the wrong order you may not be able to get the camera working at all.

Choose a delivery system

How are your images going to get to your viewers? There are basically 3 choices. Scroll further down the page to see the details on each of the following options.

1. Use a Web-Cam service such as Yahoo, AOL or SKYPE or HeloWorld (pay service). This is the simplest system for the beginner. However, this method requires the other person to install the same service in order to see your camera and usually gives the poorest image quality. There are also a number of pay webcam services, but I don't have any experience with them so they won't be covered here.

2. FTP to your website. Use Web-Cam software that uploads pictures to a website via FTP (File Transfer Protocol). This method is more complicated than #1 and you must have your own website which is FTP accessible. This may be the best method if you have a dial up connection, and expect to have more than one person watching at the same time.

3. In house server. Use Web-Cam software that uses your computer as a web or streaming media server. This is not recommended for the beginner because of security issues and complexity of setup. However, this method can usually deliver the best quality images and can offer a much faster image refresh rate than the FTP method, providing you have a high speed Internet connection.

Get busy, and communicate via voice and image. Yahoo is extremely easy to use via chatting with any friend around the world.  If you both have a Web-Cam, you are a ‘Click Away’ from a wonderful experience, a truly joyful moment of seeing each other, like chatting over morning coffee.
There is more to webcams, technical considerations, and often a need to download drivers, but for the average user, using the webcam on your computer or buying one readily available, go for it and have fun! Go over to your computer and “look for that web camera.”  It might just be there waiting for you to use it!!

You can purchase a Web-Cam at many local outlets including Target, WalMart, &  Best Buy;  or online.  TigerDirect is an excellent site.  In any case, talk with knowledgeable store reps, just get one, probably for under $50, even $25.  They will serve most needs.  If need high quality imaging for professional reasons, there are excellent webcams that allow this, especially for teleconferencing, presentation of complex diagrams and images.

Youtube video on webcam

I was looking on the web for good webcam samples, and it was disappointing. Too many "sexy" videos, and some very boring scene videos, other very poor quality videos. It apparently takes some skills to make a decent video. Personally, I just use them to see family and friends, where it is okay that it isn't a "great" movie. So don't expect an Academy Award for your video!

For better quality home movies, see Digital Video Recorders!
