Note: This works for wired and wireless networks.

This covers the basics of - Network-Troubleshooting, Problem Solving of Networks.

Occasionally, you will get "Server Not Found" message, which indicates that you have lost your network.

Server Not Found

If you have lost your internet connectivity , do the following Basic-Network-Troubleshooting:

1. Turn the power off on the cable modem. (Note: many cable modem s do not have a power switch, so just pull the power connection out from the back of the cable modem. Leave power off for 30 seconds. When you re-connect, wait until all the normal modem lights are on, then retry internet again.

2.Turn the power off on your Router (If you have one), usually similar to modems, by unplugging.

3. Turn both Cable Modem and Router back on after waiting 30 seconds. Allow about one minute for both units to turn on correctly.

3. If still no connection, then reboot your PC, and try internet connection again.

4. If no internet, then let's repair the internet connection . This step will clear ARP cache, renew IP address, etc. to reset the network connection.

Bypass Router image

Bypassing your Router (If you suspect a bad router)

The above diagram, (red arrow) shows connecting the cable modem directly from the cable modem, into the ethernet port on your PC (ethernet connection). By doing this, you are bypassing your router. Be sure to power off your cable modem and reboot the PC, so that everything will reset the connection for this new configuration.

Checking to see if Router is Bad:

1. Check with other computers on the network, and see if any other can see the internet.

2. If all computers can't connect, then we need to remove the router from the network, temporarily.

Connect the cable Modem directly to your PC's ethernet connection. (see Figure above for details).

note: you will need to reset the modem and the PC, after you have removed the router, to re-establish proper network connectivity.

4.If you still don't have the internet, then call your internet provider ( cable company) , or Telco, such as Verizon, and ask for internet service. Most will provide support at no extra charge. They will probably take you through some of these same steps, so just bear with them. They can also check to see if they have a service problem in your area. If after working with your internet service provider, they may tell you that you have "computer" problem. At this point, you should contact your local computer repair person.

If you receive this message Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage , then Microsoft has these tips for Network-Troubleshooting.

Using an Alternate Browser:

I've noticed that in a number of cases Internet Explorer(IE) could not get to the internet, and the user thinks it is a network problem! But in reality, it was a problem with IE! Sometimes, the cure was to use another browser, and you can get to the internet!

I make it a habit to check that my customers have at least one other browser installed. I typically use Firefox, but Google Chrome or Opera are also okay.

If you don't have an alternate browser, get one now! Don't wait until you network is down, before you think of it! It is hard to download one, after your network is down!

Networking - from TigerDirect

I buy a lot of stuff from TigerDirect. Here is a link to their networking inventory. I usually buy Linksys (Cisco) or Netgear, because over the years these have held up well. As of late, I'm beginning to see D-Link doing ok too.
