Home-Theater
A home theater is a theater built in a home, intended to simulate a commercial theater experience. This can be anything from a large screen TV, to a specially built room, with very expensive furniture and viewing equipment.
Typically, an average consumer would go to a Store like Best Buy, to see what they have. But, an afficieondo may go to an Audio-Visual company to get a custom built home theater. However, if you go to Walmart, they will also have something called home theater.

Inexpensive Home Theater
If you just add some type of surround sound speakers to your existing TV, you would be making your first "baby step" toward a home theater. Maybe your next step would be to get a really large flat screen TV.
Look at the Amazon Home Theater Link to get an idea of what is available. Most of these units would give you the sound improvement for surround sound, and possibly the DVD-Bluray player. You would still need a large wide screen TV, which most of us already have. But, when you compare that to the custom home theater system, you are still missing the seating! You may also have improper lighting, and the sound may interfere with the rest of the house! Also, you need a source of movies! See Internet TV for potential movie sources, other than movie rentals or purchases.
Modest Home Theater
A modest system is frequently a very nice (large) flat screen TV, and an excellent sound system, and would definitely have an Internet TV connection (Netflix, Apple TV, Amazon etc) to play movies, and of course a Bluray DVD player. You would also probably want seating to be properly located, relative to the speakers, to get surround sound properly. Ideally, this room would be far enough away from the other rooms in the house, so that you could turn the volume up!
Custom Home Theater
Be prepared to spend many $$$! These custom theaters frequently include specially built rooms, that are sound insulated, special furniture and some very elaborate equipment. I've seen some done for $30,000, that were very nice but in reality, you could spend much more! In these theaters, notice furniture placement. Speakers usually are not very obvious, either.
Look at the Amazon Home Theater Link , go to the bottom of the page, then click on Home Theater Systems, and page through the options. They have some very impressive systems, at what appears to be acceptable prices for custom systems. This could be what you are looking for!
