File-Backup

for Windows 7

One of the common questions I get from computer novices, is "How do I copy a file (or program)?"

You need to know how to do this, particularly when you want copy documents and/or pictures to an external device such as a USB Flash drive, or an external hard drive. So here, you will see how to backup a picture to my external hard drive.

The first thing you need to do, is to find what you want to copy (your target!)

Data-Backup - Overview on data backup, to go with this detailed instruction of "how to".

Copy - target

Start Button Windows 7

First, find the Start Button (in Windows 7, it is in the lower left corner (red circle),

Click ..... Start Button

Start-My-Computer Win7

After you click the start button, you'll get the above image. I have moved my cursor (mouse) to

highlight ..... Computer

then click ..... Computer

My-Computer Win7

Look into picture brlow, and I want to open the Picture folder.

What I plan to do is copy a picture.

So I move my cursor over to the picture symbol as in red circle above.

Then click on ..... Pictures

My-Picture-select Win7

Then I get a display of folders and individual pictures that are in My Pictures folder. Your computer will have similar pictures and folder.

Now I selected a picture (CrownVic), and I right clicked on the picture

My-Picture-right-click Win 7

after the Right click, I get a drop-down menu as in above image.

Move your cursor to the copy command,

then Left-Click.......... Copy

Note: Nothing visibly happened yet, but this image has pasted to your clip board by Windows, so you can paste it later.

Paste

Now that we have the picture copied, we need to put it somewhere! So I'm going to past this picture to my OneTouch4 Mini (E:), which is my external hard drive, that I have attached to my USB port.

My-Computer-Select-OneTouch4 Mini Win 7

In the above display,

I moved my cursor to my OneTouch4 Mini (E:) and I right clicked it.

that gives me a drop down menu with choices. I chose to open

I next chose theTest folder (Red Circle)

Drive E destination folder Win 7

I right-clicked the Test Folder

Paste to OneTouch4 Win 7

Now I can click ...... Paste to complete this action.

You need to practise this a few times, where it becomes easier.
