Change-Startup

MSCONFIG is a Microsoft utility, that helps you setup what will happen in start-up, services, etc.  In this exercise, we will modifying which programs to start-up What this does is reduce start up time, and will let Windows XP  start quickly.

The reason we want to Change-Startup is to speed up your computer. This is one of the best techniques for sppeding up your PC.

Let's go!

click on          Start

Start-Run

Click on     Run

and then type      msconfig

MSconfig

click on              OK

You'll get this next screen

msconfig-selective

Then click on the Startup Tab

Then click      OK

MSconfig-Startup-tab

All of these programs are in the start-up, and you probably don't want all of them. You should "un-check" everything, except any of the Anti-virus program -(Norton's (Symantec), or McAfee or whatever anti-virus program you use. Other programs that you keep in start-up could be toolbars that you like. I'm keeping DrgToDsk, because I wnat that on my desktop for frequent use.

This is what is left, after unchecking many start-up entries. My anti-virus is AVG, and I want to keep the DrgToDsk on my desktop.

You need to make note of what you unchecked, so that if you find something that is not working, you can come back and recheck. One item that needs to run (for Lexmark printers) is lexbce server.

Eliminating items when you change startup is an art, not a science. But it can make a difference in startup time.

Now click Apply, then click OK. You're done with Change-Startup. Changes won't take effect until the next time you boot.

The next time you boot, you'll get a message that the system configuration has been changed (which is true!). Click the box in the lower left corner, to turn off the message in the future.
