An ATM-Skimming device can record your financial information from your debit card!
The sad part, is that you may not have adequate protection! Even if you do have protection, imagine you checking account being wiped out! What do you live on, while you are being reimbursed from insurance!

What can you do?
Look for something that doesn't belong
devices like above
fake speaker cover, etc
Brochure holder
Mirror
Consistently use same ATM(s) - if possible. This would make it easier to spot changes!
Use ATM's ony in Secure Locations
Stand alone ATM Kiosks are common targets for thieves
If possible, use ATM in the bank
Apply for on-line account monitoring, with your bank
Get Debit card insurance
(I have mine with my home owner policy). Talk to your insurance agent, and to your bank! The peace of mind is worth it! I love my debit card, but I can't afford to be wiped out!
Don't put all your cash in one account
Another account, where you have as your major reserves, but with no ATM. You can use on-line transfers from one account to the other!

Europe has had improved cresit and debit cards for several years now. US is finally doing something!
